Eco Friendly & Vegan Candles

Our eco friendly candles are vegan and cruelty free. We use 100% rapeseed and coconut wax, which is more environmentally friendly than soy or paraffin. The rapeseed oil and coconut oil is blended in Europe, free from synthetic material and preservatives. It also contains no added beeswax, palm oil or paraffin wax.

An eco-friendly candle uses alternatives to paraffin wax, which is still widely used for many candles and wax products. Paraffin is a highly combustible substance created as a bi-product of the oil industry. The European Candle Association has refuted claims that paraffin wax releases toxic chemicals over the other wax alternatives, however, due to how this wax is made, we don’t want to use it.

Choosing fragrances that are free of unhealthy ingredients is important, as well as lead free, cotton wicks and sustainable packaging. Here at The Northern Wood Company, we also give 10% of our profits back to the environment by donating them to replanting charities around the UK.

For us, coconut wax is a better choice than soy wax. A natural, renewable and biodegradable wax, it burns more slowly and at a cooler temperature, which helps to distribute fragrance.

Soy wax in comparison, is natural, renewable and biodegradable too, but with the demand for it increasing in recent years, a disturbing amount of deforestation has come about, including the removal of large green areas to establish new soy fields. There are also growing concerns around the soybean industry and the use of pesticides and fertilisers.

Many companies also mix soy with paraffin in their candles. We took the decision early on in our business to change from soy to coconut wax for these reasons.
