Non-toxic candles, poured with purpose
"We started making candles because we couldn’t find any that ticked all the boxes—clean ingredients, kind scents, and thoughtfully made here in the UK. So we made our own."
— Ryan & Jack, Founders
At Northern Wood Co, our non-toxic candles are hand-poured in Northumberland using a clean-burning blend of rapeseed and coconut wax. No paraffin. No hidden nasties. Just natural ingredients, comforting scents, and an eco-conscious mindset behind every flame.

What makes a candle non-toxic?
Not all candles are as clean as they seem. Many shop-bought options use paraffin wax—a by-product of petroleum—which can release unwanted chemicals into the air when burned.
That’s why we keep things simple and safe.
Our candles are made without:
- Paraffin wax
- Phthalates
- Artificial dyes
- Lead or zinc-core wicks
- Overpowering synthetic fragrances
We use a natural wax blend, gentle fragrance oils, and clean-burning wicks—so you can enjoy every burn with peace of mind.
A simple checklist for safe candles
The wax we use, and why it matters
We tested a lot of options before settling on our signature wax blend. Soy didn’t sit right—there are ongoing concerns around deforestation and traceability and paraffin… that was never even a consideration.
Rapeseed and coconut wax gave us everything we were looking for: a clean, long-lasting burn, a smooth creamy finish, and a smaller environmental footprint. It’s grown in Europe, doesn’t rely on intensive farming practices, and blends beautifully with our fragrances.
It’s simple. It’s sustainable. And it works. That’s why we use it in every candle we pour.
Scents that are kind to you (and the planet)
Many candles use synthetic fragrance oils that can be overpowering, irritating, or even trigger headaches. We keep things different.
We scent our candles using a blend of natural and carefully selected synthetic fragrance oils, chosen not only for safety and performance, but for their lower environmental impact.
Why not essential oils?
We’ve tested them, and while they’re natural, they’re not always the most sustainable or effective option. Some require huge amounts of raw materials to produce, and they don’t always perform well in candles.
We use a blend of natural and carefully chosen synthetic fragrance oils that offer a better burn, a balanced scent, and a lighter footprint overall.

Non-toxic FAQs
What candles are non-toxic?
Candles made with clean-burning, natural waxes like rapeseed, coconut, or beeswax, and free from paraffin, phthalates, and harsh synthetic fragrance are considered non-toxic. Ours are scented using a blend of natural and carefully selected synthetic oils for a safer, more balanced burn.
How to tell if a candle is toxic
Check the label. Avoid candles with paraffin wax, purely artificial scent, artificial coloured dyes, or lead-core wicks.
Do all candles have benzene?
No—but paraffin wax candles can release benzene when burned. Our candles are benzene-free and made with natural wax.
What is the healthiest candle wax to breathe?
Rapeseed and coconut wax are among the cleanest-burning and most sustainable options for home use.
